You're looking at a pocket of time millions of years in the making — each crystal grew in darkness, one layer at a time, inside a hollow of volcanic rock. Ancient Greeks believed it guarded against intoxication, carving drinking cups from it and naming it amethystos: "not drunk." What began as a bubble of gas in cooling lava became a cathedral of violet — sealed away until the day someone cracked the stone open.
